The Spotsylvania Battlefield
is a very quiet and peaceful place to visit. However during the civil war,
some of the bloodies battles were found on these grounds. Today developers
are trying to purchase parts of the battle lands to build homes and shopping
centers.
In the middle fo the
Spotsylvania Battlefield is a small parking area that leads to a large
open area known as the Bloody Angle. The Bloody Angle is the site of a
famous bloody civil war battle. The walking tour takes you past several
monuments and ruins of an old house. The entire walk takes about 30-45
minutes. While you are parked there, you can cross the road and tour the
other battle areas.
Located in Spotsylvania,
just off Courthouse road, this battle area,is quickly being encrouched
by developers. The last major fighting at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court
House occurred on May 19, 1864, at the Harris Farm. When these photos were
taken several years ago, the area was mostly untouched. Today the area
is protected by airon fence.
Located in Spotsylvania
off of Brock Road, is the site of the country crossroads called Todd's
Tavern. The area is still mostly untouched today. The only signs of civialization
are the power lines runnig through the area and the small store across
the street. The cavalry engagement at Todd's Tavern, May 7, 1864, is an important link between Wilderness and Spotsylvania. The Confederate horsemen's success in delaying the march
of the Union army prolonged the war.
