Also part of the park is the old Virginia Central Rail Road. A sign marking the old railbed provides a brief history of the old rail road. It was chartered by the state in 1853 as the Fredericksburg & Gordonsville Rail Road. Construction began in 1854. The company went bankrupt after only laying 18 miles of roadbed. Ater the war, construction resumed by a new company. The line was named the Potomac, Fredericksburg & Peidmont and ran to the town of Orange. In 1926 the railway was name the Virginia Central. The Virginia Central also failed and all but one mile of track was removed in 1938. That mile of track remained operational until 1984.
