| Once again the National
Scout Jamboree took place at Fort A.P. Hill, just outside of Bowling
Green, VA, in Caroline County.
Caroline County is largely a rural farm area. Many participants have already
started making preparations and for very good reason.
This year the BSA
is planning to have 30,500 scouts and leaders (along with 5,000 adult and
youth staff members) participate in the Jamboree. Lodging
will become sparse close to the Jamboree so it does require decisions to
be made rather quickly. If there is no lodging available near the Jamboree,
Fredericksburg has plenty of available lodging.
Food decisions
will be a little easier but there aren't a lot of national chains so the
Jamboree will be a discovery time of the Mom and Pop type restaurants.
So now that we've semi established
some place to stay and that food is nearby, let's talk a little more about
the Jamboree.
The Jamboree is scheduled
to start on July 23, 2001 and end on August 1, 2001. There will be
a number of tents popping up in no time. The expected arrivals will
have 12,000 acres at their disposal to explore and learn on. It is
expected to become a temporary city to the participants. There will
be 4 regional camping areas and 19 sub camps. The “city” will provide
all things necessary for scouts in a safe environment.
Who will be able to attend
you ask? Registered Boy Scouts who have achieved the rank of First
Class and who will have completed 6th grade (or be age 12) by July 1, 2001
and have not reached his 18th birthday by August 2, 2001.
2001 Theme “Strong
Values Strong Leaders Character Counts”
