Who can vote in the Commonwealth
of Virginia?
Any registered voter who
is at least the age of 18 years old. A registered voter must be a citizen
of the United States, and a resident of the Commonwealth.
Who can not vote in the
Commonwealth of Virginia?
People under the age of
eighteen, those who are not a U.S. Citizen, those who are not a resident
of the Commonwealth, those who have been convicted of a felony and those
persons found mentally incompetent may not vote.
I'm will be eighteen by
election time, can I register to vote?
If you will be eighteen
at the next general election, you may register in advance and may also
vote in any intervening primary or special election.
Where can I register to
vote?
You can register in any
voters
registrar's office in the Commonwealth of Virginia. You may also register
at the offices of the Department
of Motor Vehicles, when you renew or apply for a Virginia drivers license
or identification card.

When can I register?
You can register at anytime
throughout the year. To vote in a general or primary election, you must
register at least 29 days before the election. To vote in a special election,
you must register at least 14 days before the election.
Can I register by mail?
Yes, you can register by
mailing in the postcard registration application, available at most public
libraries and information centers.
Do I have to state my
political party preference?
No, Virginia does not have
registration by political party.
Do I have to register
for each election?
No, your registration remains
valid unless you change your address.
Where do I vote?
Your local registrar will
send you a voter information card. The card will tell you the name of your
precinct and where you will vote. You must always vote in the precinct
in which you live. Your voter card also contains the Senatorial, House
of Delegates, and Congressional district numbers of your area. You can
also use the Virginia
State Board of Elections online find your polling place.
When are the voting polls
open?
The polls open at 6:00 a.m.
and close at 7:00 p.m. each Election Day. If you are waiting in line when
the polls close, you will be allowed to vote.
